Advocacy in action

Advocacy ensures the voices of cooperative members are heard by policymakers at all levels of government, and this past year was filled with impactful milestones. As we begin a new legislative session, we are sharing the progress made through the advocacy efforts of Oklahoma’s electric cooperatives.

Federal engagement

From national conferences to one-on-one meetings, we maintained a strong presence in Washington, DC. Highlights included visits with our senators and representatives, hosting receptions for congressional staff, and discussing key issues directly with policymakers. These efforts ensured our priorities — like reliable energy and broadband access — remained top of mind.

Youth Tour

Seventy high school students from across the state participated in the 2024 Youth Tour in Washington, DC, learning about advocacy and the legislative process. Their enthusiasm and engagement showcased the bright future of civic leadership.

State-level advocacy

At the State Capitol, events like the “Out of the Gate” reception and OAEC Capitol Day provided
opportunities to connect with lawmakers, including 79 state legislators and key state officials. Co-op leaders shared their vision for rural Oklahoma’s energy and broadband.

Throughout the year, local cooperatives hosted town hall meetings, office visits and community events to engage directly with legislators. These grassroots efforts strengthened relationships and highlighted the cooperative commitment to rural communities.
