Keeping up with growing power needs

When Oklahoma’s electric cooperatives first brought power to rural areas, a few light bulbs and maybe a refrigerator were all most families needed. Today, we’re plugging in electric vehicles, powering data centers and relying on electricity for nearly every part of daily life. Demand for electricity is surging, and it’s not slowing down anytime soon.

Right here in Oklahoma, we’re seeing big changes. Data centers are considering rural areas, drawn by low cost energy. These facilities use a huge amount of electricity — 24/7. Meanwhile, more people are installing efficient electric heat pumps and driving EVs, further pushing up demand.

But meeting this growing need isn’t as simple as flipping a switch. Reliable, always-available power — fueled by natural gas and coal — has been the backbone of our grid for years. Now, many of these plants are shutting down, and while renewable energy is expanding, it’s not yet reliable enough to handle the constant demand on its own.

The high demand makes upgrading our systems harder. It can take much longer to get basic equipment like transformers, and prices keep climbing. These challenges mean we have to plan carefully and think ahead to keep opportunities bright for Oklahoma’s families and businesses.
