Giving back beyond borders

I recently had an experience that brought the spirit of the holidays to life in a powerful way. During National Cooperative Month in October, I joined a team of Oklahoma electric cooperative lineworkers on an international electrification project in Guatemala. Together with Ohio’s electric cooperatives, these volunteers are providing first-time electricity to this remote village, lighting up homes, schools and lives.

For the people of Barejones, the gift of electricity is nothing short of life-changing. Before our team arrived, villagers relied on daylight for their work and chores and traveled long distances to access basic services. Now, they can flip a switch and experience something we often take for granted: the glow of electric lights. Watching their faces light up was a profound reminder of the impact that access to electricity can have on a community.

The holiday season calls us to think beyond ourselves, to consider how we might serve others, especially those without the resources we sometimes overlook in our own daily lives. The co-op volunteers spent long days installing poles and running lines over rugged terrain, facing challenges that were tough but fulfilling. Seeing them work alongside the villagers, I saw through them a deep connection to the cooperative spirit — neighbors helping neighbors, across miles and cultures.

This project reflects the true meaning of giving. It’s about empowering lives and bringing hope to those who need it most. As we celebrate the holidays here in Oklahoma, I hope we can all carry the spirit of this season forward, inspired by the gift of light shared in Barejones. It is a reminder that giving knows no boundaries, and as cooperatives, our mission to serve extends well beyond our state lines. This December, let’s shine a little brighter, together, for those near and far.
