Why investing in infrastructure matters to you
Electricity is a modern marvel that powers almost everything we do. But the grid that delivers electricity to your home is the result of a lot of hard work and coordination.
Invisible to most of us is an overlay of new equipment—chips, sensors and fiber—linking remote distribution infrastructure to the utility’s operations center using advanced communications technology.
Investing in infrastructure is key to keeping the grid reliable and efficient. As technology advances and energy demands change, we need to update and maintain our infrastructure to meet these new challenges. Upgrading power lines, modernizing substations and expanding energy storage capabilities are essential for ensuring that electricity is always available.
This investment also supports resilience against outages and disruptions. A well-maintained grid can better withstand severe weather and other issues, helping to minimize the impact on your daily life. By committing to these improvements, we’re not just keeping the lights on; we’re investing in a more reliable future.
Many of the new technologies are improving the efficiency of co-op operations—from reducing the amount of electricity lost in transmission to reducing the need for sending out trucks. The data from smart technologies provide a more detailed view of what is happening on the electric system. Co-ops have found that the data can help them identify electrical hazards faster. These cost savings are passed on to co-op members.
Understanding how it all works and why investing in its infrastructure matters helps us appreciate the electric grid even more. So, the next time you are driving down a long highway and you see poles and wires stretching into the distance, know there’s more to that system than meets the eye. That electricity is more efficient, more reliable and safer thanks to innovation made possible by cooperation.
