Guiding principles of cooperation

As we close 2023, I want to remind you of the fundamental principles that guide the operation of cooperatives – the very principles that set your local co-op apart in the world of business. These principles aren’t just lofty ideals; they’re the very essence of who we are. They reflect our core values of inclusivity, democracy, shared economic participation, autonomy, education, cooperation and community care.

Voluntary and Open Membership: At the heart of cooperatives is the commitment to inclusivity. Co-ops are open to everyone, without bias. Our values center around coming together, embracing the responsibilities of membership and building something greater than ourselves.

Democratic Member Control: Democracy isn’t just a political concept at your co-op. Members actively shape policies and decisions. When you have a say, it means your elected representatives are accountable to you. It’s a simple “one member, one vote” principle that runs through all cooperative levels.

Members’ Economic Participation: We believe in fairness and equity. Every member contributes to the cooperative’s capital and owns a piece of the pie. When surplus is generated, it’s shared for the greater good – whether it’s growing your cooperative, returning capital credits to members or backing community-approved initiatives.

Autonomy and Independence: Cooperatives are self-reliant entities. Even when a co-op works with external organizations or raises capital, it maintains independence and control. This autonomy preserves their core values and ensures democratic control by the members.

Education, Training and Information: Knowledge is the cornerstone of progress. Cooperatives invest in educating and training their members, elected representatives, managers and employees. By doing so, they empower individuals to contribute effectively to the cooperative’s growth and educate the public about the immense benefits of cooperation.

Cooperation Among Cooperatives: Collaboration is the key to success. By working together on all levels – local, national, regional and global – we not only strengthen ourselves but also the entire cooperative movement.

Concern for Community: While cooperatives primarily serve the needs of their members, they also bear a broader responsibility. Cooperatives strive to foster sustainable development within their communities, aligned with policies accepted by their members. This commitment extends to contributing to the overall welfare of society.

As we approach the new year, let’s remember that these principles are more than just words on paper — they’re our compass. They guide our choices and inspire our actions. We’re all in this together, and these principles reflect our shared commitment to making this year a better, more inclusive and community-focused one. Here’s to a year filled with cooperative spirit and shared success.
